El Eco de Medianoche
🕰️ El Eco de Medianoche — Edición Legendaria
An interactive historical investigation game set in Madrid that teaches the Spanish Present Continuous (Presente Continuo) to 7th-grade Spanish-as-a-foreign-language students. This was the pioneering experiment that launched a systematic approach to creating tailored educational games for each working group.
💡 The Philosophy: Grammar Through Mystery
Traditional grammar drills are dry and disconnected from real use. El Eco de Medianoche reframes the Present Continuous as the key to unlocking a time-loop mystery in Madrid.
Students become detectives investigating why the famous clock in Madrid's heart has frozen, stopping time for everyone in Spain. To break the loop, they must conjugate verbs correctly — not as an abstract exercise, but as a tool to advance the narrative.
This was the first product to prove that custom-built, narrative-driven games could replace generic review worksheets entirely, and it established the template for subsequent gamified learning tools across other subjects.
🛠️ Core Features
- Narrative-Driven Gamification: A detective mystery set in historical Madrid — the frozen clock, cryptic clues, and a shadowy antagonist (La Sombra) provide emotional stakes for grammar practice.
- Present Continuous Mastery: Full grammar reference built into the interface (ESTAR conjugation, gerund formation, irregulars like durmiendo, leyendo, pidiendo), available in English and Spanish.
- Word Symphony Mechanic: Students order scrambled words by clicking them in correct grammatical sequence — no keyboard required, making it accessible and tactile.
- Research Notebook: Players collect historical dates and proper names throughout the investigation; this intel becomes essential for solving the final puzzles.
- Hover Translation: Complex Spanish words show English translations on mouse hover, keeping the game immersive without breaking flow.
- Multiple Investigation Paths: Choice-based structure with at least two locations (Catedral de la Almudena, Monasterio de El Escorial).
- Certificate of Achievement: Students earn a personalized diploma from Northern Virginia Spanish Academy upon successful completion, downloadable as PNG.

🧪 Significance: The Pioneer Project
El Eco de Medianoche was the first experimental implementation of custom game-based learning in the curriculum. Its success validated the approach and led to the systematic creation of tailored educational games for each subsequent working group — establishing a repeatable methodology where:
"La precisión gramatical es tu llave. Observa cada detalle histórico, pues el pasado oculta la salida."
